River & Adam

09 . 30 . 2018

Just a month ago, on September 30th, 2018, Adam Graetz and I tied the knot in a warehouse in Durham with a small group of family and friends.

We DIY-ed the entire event, staying within our meager full-time artists budget and had a great time!

A bit about our wedding:  River Takada-Capel & Adam Graetz.  We got married on Sept. 30, with a small group of 50 close friends and family in Durham, NC.  Our friend Peter Pendergrass officiated the wedding to perfection and a few tears were shed.  Our ceremony and dinner were hosted at the Durham Fruit, an event space warehouse that was once a fruit canning factory.  Adam and his friends of The Floor Dance Parties have hosted many late night events in this space so we were thrilled to have the freedom into transform it into our dream wedding space.

Special thanks to our friends and family who helped make it happen!

  • Lee Moore-Crawford of Lee Attracting Birds and Bees for arranging our flowers.

About the look:  I did a classic upcycle to create a versatile look for our wedding day.  I was given the wedding dresses of Adam's Grandmother, Mary, and Mother, Patricia; both hand made by Willie Kay, a renowned local dress maker.  Using elements of their heirloom dresses, I created a detachable train from Patricia's dress and opera glove style sleeves from Adam's Grandmother's dress.  The base dress was a Nicole Miller Dress which was perfectly simple, but I didn't like the straps so I replace them with a hand dyed silk, off the shoulder element that was hand stitched in place.
