Indigo Dye Workshops

Informative indigo dye and itajime shibori workshop.

3 hour Indigo Dye Intro:
- Focus on learning the fundamentals of how Indigo Dye is made, best practices, materials needed, and demonstrations on how to creative surface designs through ancient Japanese technique of Itajime Shibori, a shaped-resist technique. Traditionally, the cloth is sandwiched between two pieces of wood, which are held in place with string/rubber bands.  This is an ancient Japanese tie dye technique.
- Students are encouraged to bring 2-4 items, natural celulose fibers: cotton, linen, and rayon, to dye/upcycle; and will be provided with sample fabric to experiment with.
**Stitched Shibori lessons are also available, but are more labor intensive and take more time. This 3 hour (or a 6 hour intensive) can be adjusted to a Stitched Shibori Plan. Each student will get a bandana and are welcome to bring items to dye from home as well.**

6 hour workshop: True Blue Intensive:
- Each student receives one 5 gallon bucket of Indigo Dye, which can dye around 15 tee shirts or 10 yards of fabric. This class is great for someone who has large projects to work on, like a quilt, or a bunch of clothing, etc. I have also had people take this workshop and taken the bucket home to dye more with friends and family since we will most likely not use up all the dye in 6 hours. This work shop can be done all at once, 6 hours on a weekend can get your 10-15 yards or fabric dyed. Or split your workshop into two 3 hour workshops over 2 days.
Option 1: Itajime Shibori, a shaped-resist technique. Traditionally, the cloth is sandwiched between two pieces of wood, which are held in place with string/rubber bands.  This is an ancient Japanese tie dye technique.
Option 2: Stitched Shibori Sample courses are also available through this 6 hour intensive. In addition to a bandana; each student will receive a binder, plastic sleeves and fabrics for them to make a variety of stitch samplers (2-3 hour of just hand sewing followed by 3 hours of dyeing), and are welcome to bring items to dye from home as well.

Included info and supplies with all Indigo Classes:
- Clamps, resists, rubber bands, gloves and other studio supplies
- Resource list for continuing indigo dyeing beyond the workshop!

This class was not only really informative, but the best deal ever. I got to try all different types of fabric and different folding methods and keep all the fabric I made. We each got our own dye bath as well - so the fun can keep happening! River not only knows a lot about indigo, but also is a great teacher. She answered all my questions and if she didn’t know the answer was willing to explore the possibilities. She even adjusted the schedule to allow us to be in the shade and have more time to learn. I will totally be taking another class with her and would recommend her classes as a gift to someone you love or for yourself! Thank you River!

In this workshop we will explore the in-between and learn the fundamentals to pulling a clean image onto fabric and paper.  In this workshop we will talk about the ways to get your image on a screen to make small batch prints without the use of chemicals or a dark room!
