Suminagashi: Paper Marbling @ Peel Gallery

  • Peel Gallery 708 West Rosemary Street Carrboro, NC, 27510 United States (map)

Translating to “floating ink”, Suminagashi is where carbon-rich sumi inks float on water.  Participants will create patterns with ink on water then transfer their designs onto paper.  The interaction of wind, water and inks will delight and surprise, as students collaborate with the elements and learn a variety of techniques to achieve stunning designs.  Suminagashi is the oldest known form of marbling—dating back to at least the 12th century— and is distinct from marbling practices in Turkey, Iran, and Europe.

Artist and educator River Takada, will guide students through this meditative practice, allowing time to experiment and make many prints. Students will leave class with a collection of unique prints perfect for framing or incorporating into future art projects.  All supplies provided.
