Kids Summer Camp at The ArtsCenter

SOLD OUT: Kids Sewing summer camps at the ArtsCenter have already filled up.
I am currently looking for a group of kids and parents in Carrboro and Durham, to host a 3-4 day Sewing Workshop. Fabric & Fiber Arts

Beginning Sewing
This camp is for those with little or no sewing experience. Learn how to operate a sewing machine, learn some hand stitching, and experiment with a variety of stitches. Simple projects may include a pillowcase, drawstring bag, stuffed toy, or other items as time permits. Fabric, patterns, and basic sewing kits will be provided, or you are welcome to bring your own.

Intermediate Sewing (grades 3-6)
Learn the skills you’ll need for clothing construction and more in this camp. We will use a pattern to make simple items like a shirt, a tote bag, or a purse. Fabric and patterns will be provided. Some machine sewing experience required.

Advanced Sewing (grades 4-6)
This session is for campers who have already taken both Beginning and Intermediate Sewing, or have significant prior machine sewing experience. Campers should feel comfortable measuring and cutting fabric, threading a sewing machine, and winding a bobbin before enrolling in this session.

Fabric & Fiber Arts (grades 3-6)
There are so many possibilities for art made with fabric and fiber! Students will learn a variety of styles that may include stitching, dyeing, weaving, fabric collage, and clothing modification. Machine sewing will not be taught in this camp.

Handstitching & Fabric Arts (grades 2-4)
This camp is for students who are ready to learn the basics of sewing and working with fabrics. Instructors will provide an introduction to sewing tools, and students will create several small handstitched items. No machine sewing will be taught in this camp.

In this 2 hour class, get comfortable sewing with knits on your regular sewing machine, and sew cute and comfy underwear for the whole family! With options for a range of ages and preferred coverage, you'll have a new favorite pair in no time! Please cut your paper pattern in advance.

Sew Overalls at Freeman's Creative in Durham

Sew your own cute and classy overalls in this 4 session class. Pockets, straps, zippers, and buttons make this a skill-builder you can dress up or down. Students should have some experience sewing from a pattern. Do not cut fabric before class.

This class will be held Sunday mornings, 11am-2pm, March 3, 10, 17, 24.

Pattern for the Jenny Overalls;

Prewashed Bottom-weight fabric for your size (denim, twill, canvas);

Indigo Dye at Craft Habit in Raleigh

Learn to fill your home and wardrobe with the calming effect of Indigo. This workshop covers pre-reduced indigo vat, as well as different folding and clamping techniques to get the Itajime Shibori style designs! Students are welcome to bring 3-4 items, any *natural* fiber items, and fabric will also be available for an additional fee.

Craft Habit Raleigh - 2423 Crabtree Blvd, Raleigh NC

Ages 14+

In this class, you will focus on learning the fundamentals of how Indigo Dye is made, best practices, materials needed, and demonstrations on how to create surface designs through ancient Japanese technique of Itajime Shibori, a shaped-resist technique. Traditionally, the cloth is sandwiched between two pieces of wood, which are held in place with string/rubber bands.  This is an ancient Japanese tie dye technique.

This class will be held outside if weather permits, or in the classroom if needed. Either way, dress for mess!


Supplies Needed:

  • Tools, indigo dye, and sample fabric will be provided for this class

  • Students are encouraged to bring 2-4 items, natural cellulose fibers: cotton, linen, and rayon, to dye/upcycle.

Log Cabin Quilting at Freeman's Creative

In this 4 session class, learn to sew the iconic log cabin quilt block and its variations, while working intuitively with fabric and scraps. We will quilt our blocks and bind a small lap quilt.

4 Sessions: Wednesdays, 11am-1pm; Jan. 23 + 30 and Feb. 6 + 13

Mending By Hand at Freeman's Creative

Don't despair, repair! Learn the basics of hand sewing to mend tears, sew on buttons correctly, and keep small holes from becoming big problems. Bring items in need of repair, or start a mending sampler with provided materials. No sewing experience necessary. Part one in our mending series.
